The basis of this book is to introduce to the reader the concept of corporate strategy with special emphasis on the rapidly changing environment in which most contemporary organizations are operating in. The book in addition also focuses on the different approaches to crafting strategies that organizations have adopted across the world. The strategic management process is also a key focus with the process itself including the key personnel involved in strategy formulation being mentioned. The link between strategy and structure is well articulated and the various structures that are adopted by contemporary organizations are mentioned. The role of managers in these different structures is featured including how they translate strategy into concrete actions. Organizations do not operate in a vacuum. They need to have an understanding of the environment in which they function. This includes both their internal and external environments. The book provides a glimpse of what these environments are, the elements that constitute these environments and how they affect the operations of organizations today. Key to this section of the book is the various techniques that can be used to scan the environment. In addition, understanding competition and how companies respond to it is well presented. Finally, a major strength of this book is the current examples that it gives to provide the reader with a much better understanding of the concept of corporate strategy.
Dr. Simon Kibet Kipchumba is currently the Registrar (Administration and Human Resource) at Kabarak University. Previously, he was a Senior Lecturer and Head of Business Administration Department at Egerton University. He holds a Bachelor of Business Management from Moi University, Master of Business Administration from Egerton University, and PhD in Educational Economics and Management from Nanjing Agricultural University in China. His area of specialization is Human Resource and Management, Strategic Management, Organizational behavior, performance management and Business Communication. Dr. Kipchumba has participated in a number of seminars, workshops, and conferences worldwide. He has published a number of journal articles. His research interests are in Performance Management, Management of Higher Education, Knowledge Management, and Talents Management.
Joseph Denis Wamoto has over 15 years experience in Human Resource Management Practice and Consultancy. He has also lectured in a number of universities and tertiary institutions teaching business courses including courses in entrepreneurship, human resource management and more specifically the development of human resource strategies. He has a wealth of experience in a range of areas including Training, Content Development, Recruitment, Performance Management and other people-focused solutions for businesses. He currently provides human resources solutions to smaller businesses particularly those in need of outsourced human resource services. He has worked in different organizations in the public, private, NGO and educational sectors. He holds a Masters degree in Business Administration (MBA) specializing in Human Resource Management from Egerton University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in the Social Sciences from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa. He is also a Certified Human Resource Practitioner (CHRP-K).
